The Advantages of Modeling with Paper

To model railroaders who’ve never built a model out of paper and cardstock, they may not know the advantages of paper modeling, so I thought I’d share a few bits.

  • Cost: Paper and cardstock modeling of railroad buildings and structures is the ultimate in low cost. It hearkens back to the early days when modelers would build structures from what could be found around the house. With paper modeling the kits are very inexpensive, paper is inexpensive, and cardstock could be either purchased or re-purposed from cereal boxes.
  • Time: Although it takes more time during the build process to construct a paper model, it is less time to finish than plastic kit models. The reason is a paper model is already “painted” while plastic kits need priming and finishing with paint and decals which is quite time-consuming and requires an artistic hand to do it well. Also, purchasing the paper model kit does not require the time to drive to the hobby shop (though who doesn’t like going to the hobby shop?).
  • Completed Model: Cardstock and paper models can look every bit as great as craftsman wood and plastic models. Whether using a kit or scratch building with texture prints, the realism and fine detail of the images on printed paper just can’t be duplicated by hand. Completed railroad paper structures look terrific.

If you are considering building in paper try our free Loading Dock kit. It is quick to build (and the more you build the faster you’ll get!) and is a great introduction to making paper and cardstock buildings and structures for model railroads.

Working on the Smallest Details

Paper Model Railroad Detail

As we wrap up the creation of the Cricket Railroad Depot and Little Red School House paper model kits for model railroads, we begin working on the smaller details. Highlighting this is a photo of our desks, shown in both HO and N scales. We’re striving to add lots of extras and detail features into all our kits, from desks and benches to pallets, boxes and air conditioners. Personally, I’m really excited to get started on industrial details such as tanks, cyclones, piping, conveyors and more.

Stay tuned as we work hard to bring you an ever expanding selection of fine downloadable paper model kits in OO, HO, and both U.S. and Euro N scales.

Cricket Train Depot Progress

Here’s the Cricket Train Depot shown in N scale. The Cricket Railway Depot kit is a small rural combination depot with lobby, office and freight room. It will include a low platform and the platform can be extended and curved as needed for your layout. We hope to have this available in a couple weeks, and will come in multiple scales and colors.

Working on the Team Track Loading Docks

Spent the day creating the concrete version of the Team Track Loading Docks. It’s been fun adding the details of weathering and heavy use to try and bring out the realism, then to test assemble the model to see the results. A team track is one of the more useful additions to any layout, and most had simple loading docks to aid the transfer of goods between trucks and box cars. We’ll have versions in both concrete and wood. I remember a quote in Model Railroader magazine from many years ago saying “any layout could use a dozen of these.” Fortunately with a paper model design you only need to download it once and then you can make as many as you want.
